Today we’re going to start with the basics of Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

As you know, the majority of traffic on the web is driven by the big search engines: Google, Bing, Yahoo! and a few more.

Consider these the super highways that your customers drive, looking for who to do business with.

Search Engine Optimization is when you take the steps to rank higher in these search engines.

There are two parts to SEO, Off-Site and On-Site SEO

On-Site SEO

On-Site SEO has to do with the content on your website. This means making sure that your descriptions, headings and structure of your website is optimzied to promote your keywords successfully. Off-Site SEO

Off site SEO refers to the promotion of your website by other sites, for example inbound back-links. They are extremely important because these inbound links are the main way search engines can tell if a website is reliable or not. However, you want to make sure that these are done correctly.

If you are going to build back-links to your site, make sure the websites they are coming from are relevant to the keywords you are wanting to rank for. Search engines want to see that people in the same industry as you, find your site reliable and trustworthy.

Off-Site SEO also includes what is called Local SEO. This is where you focus on getting your business ranked highly for customers searching near you. This is extremely important if the majority of your business is done at a physical location.
